EX LIBRIS - The New York Public Library

Parents of Social Informatics

Library scientists were among the early ones, if not the first, who became aware that learning and knowledge need management.

How can we store and pass knowledge on? Is it possible at all? Knowledge is a result of receiving data and setting them into relation with own experiences plus using this for decisions.

The staff and the users, young and adult, at the New York Public Library show us in Wiseman's clip: it works. And it is joyful.

Librarians play a core role in social informatics [2]. Since several decades they are aware that the storage and retrieval of books, journals and other knowledge-"boxes" need databases. They empowered the development of e-learning in close cooperation with computer scientists. In my view library scientists belong to the parents of social informatics.

Frankfurter Buchmesse #fbm18 is done. Time for a visit of your favourite library.
